Procedure
4-[2-[[(4-Acetylphenyl)amino]methyl]-6-methoxy-phenoxy]butanoic acid, ethyl ester (250 mg, 0.65 mmol) is dissolved in 5 mL of methanol/water (3:2) and treated with 313 mg (2.27 mmol) of potassium carbonate according to the procedure described for Example 4 to give 166 mg (71%) of 4-[2-[[(4-acetylphenyl)amino]-methyl]-6-methoxy-phenoxy]butanoic acid as a red colored solid: m.p. 85°-95° C.; The 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) is consistent with the desired product; IR (KBr) 3400, 1720, 1630, 1580 cm-1 ; MS (CI) m/e calculated for C20H23 O5NNa: 380.1473, found 380.1482; 358 (M+H), 233, 223, 221, 136.
