Procedure
Ethyl 4-hydroxy-7-methoxy-3-quinolinecarboxylate (24.7 g, 0.1 mol) was hydrolysed with 2N aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide (250 ml) through boiling for 2 hours. The reaction mixture was allowed to cool to room temperature and adjusted with 2N hydrochloric acid to pH 5. The resulting precipitates were collected by filtration and washed with water. The precipitates were dried at 100°-120° C. for 3 hours in an oven and further dried under reduced pressure overnight over calcium chloride to obtain 21.4 g (98%) of 4-hydroxy-7-methoxy-3-quinolinecarboxylic acid.
