To a stirred, cooled (0° C.) mixture of 3-amino-4-methylbenzyl alcohol (10.0 g, 0.072 mol) and pyridine (5.8 g, 0.072 mol) in THF (100 ML) was added 3-nitrobenzoyl chloride (13.5 g, 0.072 mol). After 2 h, the mixture was concentrated, suspended in water and filtered to give a brown solid. Trituration with hot EtOH gave 18.8 g (90%) of product as a white solid, mp 198°-200° C.; 1H NMR (DMSO-d6) δ 2.20 (s, 3 H), 4.46 (s, 2 H), 7.12 (dd, J=7.8 Hz, 1.5 Hz, 1 H), 7.25 (dd, J=7.8, 1.5 Hz, 1 H), 7.82 (m, 1 H), 8.41 (m, 2 H), 8.78 (s, 1 H), 10.26 (s, 1 H).
