To a stirred solution of ethyl 3-formyl-4-hydroxybenzoate [see: Skattebol, Acta. Chemica. Scandinavica 1999, 53, 258] (1.9 g, 10.0 mmol) and anhydrous K2CO3 (2.7 g, 19.5 mmol) in acetone (30 mL) is added allyl bromide (1.7 mL, 19.8 mmol). The mixture is heated in a 60° C. oil bath for 2 h. The mixture is cooled to rt, filtered and concentrated in vacuo to afford 2.1 g (92%) of ethyl 4-(allyloxy)-3-formylbenzoate as a white solid: 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 10.5, 8.5, 8.2, 7.1, 6.1, 5.5, 5.4, 4.8, 4.4, 1.4.
