Procedure
To a solution of 2-(propylaminocarbonyl)-2-(4-methylphenylmethyl)hydrazinecarboxylic acid, 1,1-dimethylethyl ester (3.0204 g, 9.397 mmol) in dichloromethane (25 mL) was added methanesulfonic acid (762 μL, 11.7 mmol) and the mixture stirred for 21 h. The mixture was then concentrated in vacuo to an oil and recrystallized (ethyl acetate) to afford the title compound as a white solid (2.0639 g, 6.502 mmol, 69%): mp 108.5-111.4° C.; 1H NMR (DMSO-d6) δ 7.56 (s, 1H), 7.18 (s, 4H), 4.67 (s, 2H), 3.06 (t, 2H, J=7.0 Hz), 2.35 (s, 3H), 2.81 (s, 3 H), 1.44 (m, 2H), 0.82 (t,. 3H, J=7.5 Hz); 13C NMR (DMSO-d6) δ 157.7, 138.0, 132.5, 129.9, 128.8, 52.7, 42.7, 40.6, 23.3, 21.4, 11.9; IR (CHCl3) 3416, 3009, 2967, 2936, 2877, 1691, 1543 cm−1. Anal. Calcd. for C12H19N3O.CH4O3S: C, 49.19; H, 7.30; N, 13.24. Found: C, 48.87; H, 7.32; N, 13.28.
