5-Bromomethyl-2-phenylbenzoxazole 56 (1.0 g, 3.4 mmol) and cesium acetate (1.33 g, 6.94 mmol) were stirred together in DMF(25 ml) under an atmosphere of N2 overnight. The DMF was evaporated under high vacuum and the residue partitioned between ethyl acetate (100 ml) and water (100 ml). The ethyl acetate layer was separated then washed and dried. Evaporation of the solvent yielded 920 mg of acetic acid 2-phenylbenzoxazol-5-ylmethyl ester 57.
