N,N-Dimethylethylenediamine (2.54 mL, 22.0 mmol) was added to a solution of N-(2-methoxyethoxy)phthalimide (3.32 g, 15.0 mmol) in EtOH (50 mL), and the reaction allowed to stir at RT for 15 h. Glacial acetic acid (20 mL) was then added to adjust the mixture to Ca. pH 4, followed by the addition of a solution of N-(2-acetyl-4-chlorophenyl)trifluoromethanesulfonamide 19 (3.02 g, 10.0 mmol) in EtOH (2 mL), and the mixture stirred for 65 h at RT. The reaction mixture was concentrated under vacuum and the residue filtered through a pad of silica (eluting with CH2Cl2/PE, 1:1). Purification by radial thin layer chromatography (eluting with CH2Cl2/PE, 1:9 to 1:1) afforded N-{4-chloro-2-[1-(2-methoxyethoxyimino)ethyl]phenyl}trifluoromethanesulfonamide 185 (3.0 g, 80%), as a colorless oil. 1H n.m.r. (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 11.40, br s, 1H; 7.65, d, J=8.8 Hz, 1H; 7.47, d, J=2.4 Hz, 1H; 7.33, dd, J=2.4 and 8.8 Hz, 1H; 4.37, m, 2H; 3.71, m, 2H; 3.41, s, 3H; 2.32, s, 3H. HRMS (M+) 374.0308.
