Reaction Steps
Potassium hydroxide (1.0 g.) in methanol (20 ml.) was added dropwise to a solution of methyl 2-(2,2',4'-trifluoro-4-biphenylyl)propionate (0.42 g.) and hydroxylamine hydrochloride (0.5 g.) in methanol (10 ml.) until the solution was just alkaline to limits. After standing overnight at room temperature the filtrate from inorganic salts was evaported to small bulk, diluted with water, washed with ether, acidified with dilute hydrochloric acid, re-extracted with ether, washed with ether, dried and evaporated to dryness. The residue was racrystallised from benzene to give 2-(2,2',4'-trifluoro-4-biphenylyl) propionhydroxamic acid, m.p. 148°-150° C. (decomp.)
