A mixture of 3.44 g. of finely divided 6-[o-(4-methyl-1-piperazinyl)phenyl]-1,2-dihydro-2-oxonicotinic acid and 35 ml. of thionly chloride is stirred at room temperature for 16 hours, then diluted with 150 ml. of dichloromethane. The resulting solution is evaporated at reduced pressure and the resulting precipitate of 6-[o-(4-methyl-1-piperazinyl)phenyl]-1,2-dihydro-2-oxonicotinyl chloride hydrochloride is collected by filtration, washed with dichloromethane and dried.
