Procedure
A solution of 85% m-chloroperbenzoic acid in chloroform (2 g/100 ml.) is added dropwise, over a period of one hour, to a stirred solution of 2.53 g. of 1-[β-chloro-4-methylthiophenethyl]imidazole in 150 ml. of chloroform at 0° C. After 6 hours, the resultant solution is washed with aqueous potassium carbonate and with water. The organic phase is separated and dried over magnesium sulfate. Evaporation of the solvent yields 1-[β-chloro-4-methylsulfinylphenethyl]imidazole.
