A mixture of 2-hydroxy-3,3,3-trifluoro-2-trifluoromethylpropionitrile sodium salt (43 g.), 4-chlorobenzyl chloride (25.6 g.) and dimethylformamide (200 ml.) is stirred at ambient temperature for 5 days, then evaporated in vacuo. Water is added to the residue, and the mixture is extracted with 1,2,2-trichloro-1,1,2-trifluoroethane. The extract is dried with sodium sulphate, and evaporated. The residue is distilled to give 2-(4-chlorobenzyloxy)-3,3,3-trifluoro-2-trifluoromethylpropionitrile, b.p. 54°-64° C. at 1 mm. pressure (41.0 g.).
