A solution of 100 mg of 1,2-dihydroxycyclohexa-3,5-diene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid in 5 mL of 5% sulfuric acid is heated at 85° C. for 60 minutes. The solid which forms is collected (by filtration or centrifugation). The filtrate shows the absence of the 270 nm absorbance. The solid is dissolved in 1 N sodium hydroxide, filtered, and the filtrate acidified with acetic acid. The solid is collected and dried to yield 2-hydroxybenzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid. m.p. >300° C. 1NMR (d6 -DMSO) δ 7.42 (lH), 7.45 (lH), 7.88 (lH). UVmax =311, 247 nm (pH 7.0), ε311 =4.1 mM-1 cm-1.
