Procedure

3-(4-Methoxybenzyloxyphenyl)-2-fluoro-1-propene, i.e., the compound of example 5, (30 mg, 0.110 mmole) was treated with saturated methanolic hydrochloric acid and stirred at room temperature for one hour. The solution was then poured onto 50 ml cold saturated sodium chloride, diluted with 20 ml ether and the pH adjusted to pH 10 with cold 0.5N sodium hydroxide. The mixture was washed 3 additional times with 15 ml portions of 0.5N sodium hydroxide, and the combined aqueous layers were then washed with 50 ml ether. The aqueous layers were then acidified with 1.0N hydrochloric acid to pH 1, solid sodium chloride added and the product extracted with ether (3×50 ml), dried(MgSO4) and concentrated under reduced pressure to give 8 mg clear oil (48%).
