Procedure

To a solution of 6-methoxy-5-amino-1, 2,3,4 -tetrahydronaphthalene-1-carbonitrile (1.7 g, 8.3 mmol) in 20 ml of anhydrous pyridine was added methanesulfonyl chloride (1.9 ml, 1.2 mmol). The resulting solution was stirred for 2 h at 25° C. The reaction mixture was concentrated in vacuo to yield an oily residue which was redissolved in EtOAc and washed with aqueous NaHCO3. The organic layer was dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated in vacuo to provide an oily residue which was purified by column chromatography (EtOAc, neat) to yield 1.5 g (65%) of the desired product. 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3): δ 6 1.82 (m, 1H), 1.94 (m, 1H), 2.14 (m, 2H), 2.96 (s, 3H), 3.03 (q, 2H, J=8.8 Hz), 3.84 (s, 3H), 3.96 (t, 1H, J=6.3 Hz), 6.85 (d, 1H, J=8.9 Hz), 7.39 (d, 1H, J=8.9 Hz).
