Procedure

The ester from step (b) was heated under reflux in 6M HCl (7.2 ml) for 2 hours under N2. The volatile compounds were evaporated. The residue was dissolved in water (5 ml), ethanol was added (20 ml) and slow addition of ether led to a white, crystalline precipitate. This mixture was kept for 12 hours in the refrigerator, filtered, washed with ether and dried under vacuum.
