The title compound was prepared from hydroxyethyl hydrazine (3.64 g, 50 mM) and ethyl 2,4-dioxovalerate (8.5 g, 50 mM) as described in Example 1 Preparation 1 as a colourless oil (9.39 g, 95%); νmax (CH2Cl2) 1700 cm-1 ; δH (CDCl3) 1.39 (3H, t, J7 Hz), 2.40 (3H, s), 2.98 (2H, t, J7 Hz), 4.33-4.48 (4H,m), and 6.39 (1H, s); E.I m/e 198 (95%).
