Procedure
An ice-cooled suspension of 3-methoxybenzo[b]thiophene-2-carboxylic acid (0.62 g, 0.003 m) and dried methylene chloride (25 ml) was treated under nitrogen with thionyl chloride (2.0 ml) and dimethylformamide (1 drop). After stirring overnight two times at ambient temperatures, the volatiles were removed in vacuo, and the solid residue washed twice by addition and removal in vacuo of small portions of benzene. The resultant off-white solid was used without further purification in the next step.
