Procedure
To a solution of ethyl bromoacetate (1.2 ml, 11 mmol) and 6-hydroxy-2-sulfamoylbenzo[b]thiophene (2.29 g, 10 mmol) in DMSO (10 ml) was added dropwise a solution of potassium bicarbonate (1.0 g, 10 mmol) and potassium carbonate (0.13 g, 1 mmol) in water (7 ml). The mixture was stirred for 1-2 days, then diluted with water. The precipitated product was collected dissolved in ethyl acetate, dried (Na2SO4) and evaporated to dryness. The residue was recrystallized from hot ethyl acetate, boiling off solvent until crystallization began, to give 1.2 g of product, m.p. 182°-184° C.
