To a solution of 1.26 g of α-t-butyloxycarbonylamino-α-(2-aminothiazol-4-yl)acetic acid ethyl ester in 5 ml of N,N-dimethylacetamide is added 708 mg of chloroacetyl chloride under stirring. After the stirring for further 1 hour at room temperature, the reaction solution is poured into water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer is washed with saturated sodium bicarbonate aq. solution and then water and dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate. The distillation of the solvent gives 1.435 g of α-t-butyloxycarbonylamino-α-[2-(chloroacetamido)thiazol-4yl]acetic acid ethyl ester as crystals (yield, 90.8%).
