A mixture of cold (0° C.) concentrated nitric acid (20.4 ml) and concentrated sulfuric acid (20.4 ml) was added in portions to a stirred solution of 10 g 4-(2,6-difluorophenyl)-pyridine in 56 ml concentrated sulfuric acid at 0° C. After 45 minutes at 0° C., the mixture was poured onto ice and the resulting solution was neutralized with solid sodium bicarbonate. It was then extracted twice with ethyl acetate and the organic extracts were dried and evaporated to give the product as white solid of m.p. 110°-112° C. (10.9 g, 88% yield). NMR (CDCl3, 60 MHz): 8.8 (m, 2H), 8.2 (m, 1H), 7.0-7.6 (m, 3H).
