In 10 ml of chloroform was dissolved 1.6 g of 6-(3,5-di-tertbutyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)-2,3-dihydroimidazo[2,1-b]thiazole and after adding thereto 1 g of m-chloroperbenzoic acid, the mixture was stirred for 10 minutes. The reaction mixture was washed with an aqueous 5% sodium hydrogen carbonate solution, dried, and then the solvent was distilled off. The crystals thus formed were recrystallized from ethanol to provide 1.3 g of 6-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)-2,3-dihydroimidazo[2,1-b]thiazole 1-oxide as the 1/2 ethanol addition product.
