To 2.0 (6.5 mmol) of ethyl 7-acetyl-1-ethyl-6-fluoro-1,4-dihydro-4-oxo-3-quinolinecarboxylate in 50 ml of dimethylformamide was added 1.71 ml (1.25 eq) of bis-t-butoxydimethylaminomethane. The mixture was heated at 70° C. for 18 hours. The mixture was then concentrated and the residue treated with ether and filtered to give 1.95 g of 7-(2'-dimethylaminoethenyl)carbonyl-1-ethyl-6-fluoro-1,4-dihydro-4-oxo-3-quinolinecarboxylic acid ethyl ester, mp 176°-179° C.
