The colourless oil, (E)-ethyl 3-(2′,5′-dimethoxy-biphenyl-4-yl)-but-2-enoate was prepared from (E)-ethyl 3-(4-bromophenyl)-but-2-enoate (example 50a) and 2,5-dimethoxyphenyl boronic acid by a procedure analogous to that described in example 52a.
