Procedure
To an ice-cooled slurry of 36.37 grams of 3-acetamido-7-ethoxy-6-methoxy-1-methyl-2-benzopyrylium perchlorate (0.1 mol) in water (400 ml) was slowly added 80 ml of concentrated ammonium hydroxide over a 10 minute period. The mixture was stirred for additional 30 minutes. The light yellow precipitate that formed was filtered, washed with water and dried to provide 23 grams of the crude title 3-isoquinolinol (100%). Recrystallization from methanol/chloroform mixture (2000 ml:700 ml) provided 18.7 grams (81.3%) of pure title 3-isoquinolinol having a melting point of 235°-240° C.(d).
