Reaction Steps

To a preheated (230°) solution of Dowtherm (500 ml) is added portion-wise 3-[[2-(2-furyl)-5-benzimidazolyl]amino]crotonate (38.5 g, 0.1 mole). After the addition is complete the reaction mixture is kept at 230° for 15 minutes, then decanted into a beaker to form, upon cooling, a tan precipitate. The precipitate is filtered and washed with hexane to give 20 g (74 percent) of tan solid. Recrystallization from CH3NO2 gives m.p. 280°-282°. Anal. Calcd. for C15H11N3O2 -1/4H2O: C, 66.78; H, 4.30; N, 15.58. Found: C, 66.56; H, 4.43; N, 15.40.
