Procedure
4-iodophenylacetic acid (5.2 g, 0.02 mol) and DMAP (0.25 g, 0.002 mol) was dissolved in dichloromethane (40 mL) and methanol (3.2 mL), and the solution was cooled to 0° C. Then a solution of DCC (4.32 g, 0.021 mol) in dichloromethane was added dropwise over a period of 15 minutes. The reaction mixture was stirred at 0° C. for 1 hour and at room temperature for 16 hours, then filtered. The filtrate was diluted with dichloromethane (40 mL) and washed with 5% citric acid (4×25 mL), water (2×50 mL), dried (Na2SO4), filtered, and concentrated. The residual liquid was purified by silica gel flash column chromatography eluting with 20% EtOAc in hexane to give methyl 4-iodophenylacetate (4.5 g, 82%) as a colorless liquid: 1H-NMR (CDCl3) δ: 7.64 (d, 2H, J=8.4 Hz), 7.01 (2H, J=8.4 Hz), 3.69 (s, 3H), 3.57 (s, 2H); FAB-MS m/z=283 (M+Li). HRMS calcd. for C9H10IO2 (M+H), 276.9725, found 276.9726.
