A mixture of 3.38 g (16.32 mmol) of methyl 3-aminobenzo[b]thiophene-2-carboxylate (J. Org. Chem. 37, 3224 (1972)) in 8 mL of N,N,-dimethylformamide dimethyl acetal is heated at reflux temperature for 2 hours, then cooled to room temperature. The solid is collected by filtration, washing with hexane and ethyl acetate to provide 3.96 g (93%) of a white solid, mp 73-74° C.
