Procedure
To stirred suspension of 4-(4-chlorophenyl)piperazine dihydrochloride (3.0 g) in dichloromethane (100 ml) at 0° C. was added triethylamine (4.6 ml). After 15 mins, a solution of 2-chlorosulfonylbenzoic acid methyl ester (2.90 g) in dichloromethane (30 ml) was added. Stirring was continued overnight with the temperature rising to RT. The reaction mixture was diluted with dichloromethane (100 ml) and then washed with 10% aqueous citric acid (3×50 ml), saturated aqueous sodium hydrogen carbonate solution (3×50 ml), water (3×50 ml) and brine (50 ml). The organic layer was then dried (MgSO4), filtered and the solvent removed under reduced pressure to give the title compound (0.24 g, 48%) as an off-white solid.
