Methyl 9-(2,5-dichlorobenzyl)-9H-β-carboline-3-carboxylate (195 mg, 0.5 mmol) was refluxed with n-propanol (15 mL) and concetrated sulfuric acid (1.5 mL) as described for the synthesis of the butyl 9-(2,5-dichlorobenzyl)-9H-β-carboline-3-carboxylate, affording an ivory-colored solid (152 mg, 74%). 1H NMR (CDCl3) δ8.94 (s, 1H), 8.85 (s, 1H), 8.28 (d, J=8.3 Hz, 1H), 7.64 (t, J=7.5 Hz, 1H), 7.45-7.40 (m, 3H), 7.22 (dd, J=8.5, 2.3 Hz, 1H), 6.55 (s, 1H), 5.66 (s, 2H), 4.45 (t,J=7 Hz, 2H), 1.93 (m, 2H), 1.07 (t, J=7 HZ, 3H); MS (APCI; (M+H)+) m/z 413.
