Excerpt from ERG Guide 156 [Substances - Toxic and/or Corrosive (Combustible / Water-Sensitive)]:
Use water spray, powder, alcohol-resistant foam, carbon dioxide.
First Aid Measures
Fresh air, rest. Half-upright position. Artificial respiration may be needed. Refer immediately for medical attention.
Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse skin with plenty of water or shower. Refer immediately for medical attention .
Rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible). Refer immediately for medical attention. Keep rinsing during transport for medical attention.
Rinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting. Give nothing to drink. Refer immediately for medical attention.
Accidental Release Measures
· CALL 911. Then call emergency response telephone number on shipping paper. If shipping paper not available or no answer, refer to appropriate telephone number listed on the inside back cover.
· ELIMINATE all ignition sources (no smoking, flares, sparks or flames) from immediate area.
First Aid
INHALATION: move victim to fresh air; if breathing has stopped, give artificial respiration.
General First Aid:
Fire Fighting Procedures
Use water spray, dry chemical, "alcohol resistant" foam, or carbon dioxide. Use water spray to keep fire-exposed containers cool. Hazardous reactions may be avoided by using large quantities of water to solubilize the anhydride & fully absorb the heat of reaction.
If material on fire or involved in a fire: Use water in flooding quantities as fog. Solid streams of water may be ineffective. Cool all affected containers with flooding quantities of water. Apply water from as far a distance as possible. Use foam, dry chemical, or carbon dioxide. Use water spray to knock-down vapors.
Storage Conditions
Separated from acids, bases, oxidants, food and feedstuffs. Dry. Ventilation along the floor.
Outside or detached storage is preferred. Separate from heat & oxidizing materials. Exclude moisture from vapor space in storage tank.
Cleanup Methods
Spill or leak procedures: Use water spray to cool and disperse vapors, protect personnel, and dilute spills to form nonflammable mixtures. Control runoff and isolate discharged material for proper disposal. Neutralize spill and washings with soda ash or lime.
Environmental considerations: Land spill: Dig a pit, pond, lagoon, or holding area to contain liquid or solid material /SRP: If time permits, pits, ponds, lagoons, soak holes, or holding areas should be sealed with an impermeable flexible membrane liner./ Dike surface flow using soil, sand bags, foamed polyurethane, or foamed concrete. Absorb bulk liquid with fly ash or cement powder.
Environmental considerations: Water spill: Neutralize with agricultural lime (Cao), crushed limestone (CaCO3), or sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3). If dissolved, in region of 10 ppm or greater concentration, apply activated carbon at ten times the spilled amount. Use mechanical dredges or lifts to remove immobilized masses of pollutants and precipitates.
Environmental considerations: Air spill: Apply water spray or mist to knock down vapors.Vapor knockdown water is corrosive or toxic and should be diked for containment.
Disposal Methods
SRP: The most favorable course of action is to use an alternative chemical product with less inherent propensity for occupational exposure or environmental contamination. Recycle any unused portion of the material for its approved use or return it to the manufacturer or supplier. Ultimate disposal of the chemical must consider: the material's impact on air quality; potential migration in soil or water; effects on animal, aquatic, and plant life; and conformance with environmental and public health regulations.
SRP: Wastewater from contaminant suppression, cleaning of protective clothing/equipment, or contaminated sites should be contained and evaluated for subject chemical or decomposition product concentrations. Concentrations shall be lower than applicable environmental discharge or disposal criteria. Alternatively, pretreatment and/or discharge to a permitted wastewater treatment facility is acceptable only after review by the governing authority and assurance that "pass through" violations will not occur. Due consideration shall be given to remediation worker exposure (inhalation, dermal and ingestion) as well as fate during treatment, transfer and disposal. If it is not practicable to manage the chemical in this fashion, it must be evaluated in accordance with EPA 40 CFR Part 261, specifically Subpart B, in order to determine the appropriate local, state and federal requirements for disposal.
Spillage Disposal
Personal protection: chemical protection suit including self-contained breathing apparatus, face shield and protective gloves. Collect leaking liquid in sealable containers. Absorb remaining liquid in dry sand or inert absorbent. Then store and dispose of according to local regulations.

Environmental Fate
TERRESTRIAL FATE: Hydrolysis half-lives of 10 and 1.0 minutes at pH values of 7 and 8, respectively, were estimated for propionic anhydride(1). Because of this rapid hydrolysis rate, biodegradation and volatilization from moist soil surfaces are not expected to be important terrestrial fate processes(SRC). Propionic anhydride is expected to volatilize from dry soil surfaces(SRC) based upon a vapor pressure of 1.36 mm Hg at 25 °C(2).
AQUATIC FATE: Hydrolysis half-lives of 10 and 1.0 minutes at pH values of 7 and 8, respectively, were estimated for propionic anhydride(1). Because of this rapid hydrolysis rate, biodegradation, bioconcentration and volatilization from water surfaces are not expected to be important aquatic fate processes(SRC).
ATMOSPHERIC FATE: According to a model of gas/particle partitioning of semivolatile organic compounds in the atmosphere(1), propionic anhydride, which has a vapor pressure of 1.36 mm Hg at 25 °C(2), is expected to exist solely as a vapor in the ambient atmosphere. Vapor-phase propionic anhydride is degraded in the atmosphere by reaction with photochemically-produced hydroxyl radicals(SRC); the half-life for this reaction in air is estimated to be 18 days(SRC), calculated from its rate constant of 9.1X10-13 cu cm/molecule-sec at 25 °C(SRC) that was derived using a structure estimation method(3). Photolysis of propionic anhydride is not expected to be an important environmetnal fate process due to the rapid hydrolysis rate(SRC).
Signs and Symptoms
Cough. Sore throat. Burning sensation. Shortness of breath. Symptoms may be delayed.
Redness. Pain. Skin burns.
Redness. Pain. Severe burns.
Burns in mouth and throat. Abdominal pain. Shock or collapse.
Medical Surveillance
Physician's written opinion. For examination or consultation required under /the OSHA laboratory/ standard, the employer shall obtain a written opinion from the examining physician which shall include the following: Any recommendation for further medical follow-up; the results of the medical examination and any associated tests; any medical condition which may be revealed in the course of the examination which may place the employee at increased risk as a result of exposure to a hazardous workplace; and a statement that the employee has been informed by the physician of the results of the consultation or medical examination and any medical condition that may require further examination or treatment. The written opinion shall not reveal specific findings of diagnoses unrelated to occupational exposure.
Human Toxicity Excerpts
/SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS/ ...Physiological effects /of acid anhydrides/ generally resemble those of corresponding acids, but they are more potent eye irritants in vapor phase, and may produce chronic conjunctivitis. They are slowly hydrolyzed on contact with body tissues and may occasionally cause sensitization. /Organic acid anhydrides/
/SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS/ Ingestion causes burns of the mouth and stomach.
/SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS/ The substance is corrosive to the eyes, the skin and the respiratory tract. Inhalation of vapor or aerosol may cause lung edema. The effects may be delayed.
Artificial Pollution Sources
Propionic anhydride's production and use as an esterifying agent for perfume oils, fats, cellulose, alkylated resins, dyestuffs, drugs and as a dehydrating agent(1) may result in its release to the environment through various waste streams(SRC).
Environmental Biodegradation
Biodegradation is not expected to be an important environmental fate process due to the rapid hydrolysis of propionic anhydride under aqueous conditions(1-2). Propionic anhydride, present at 100 mg/L, reached 83% of its theoretical BOD in 2 weeks using an activated sludge inoculum at 30 mg/L in the Japanese MITI test(3), however it is believed that this biodegradation measurement was of the acid(SRC).
Volatilization from Water/Soil
Volatilization from water surfaces or moist soil surfaces is not expected to be an important fate process due to the rapid hydrolysis of propionic anhydride under aqueous conditions(1-2). Propionic anhydride is expected to volatilize from dry soil surfaces(SRC) based upon a vapor pressure of 1.36 mm Hg(3).
Non-Human Toxicity Excerpts
