Procedure

To a stirred solution of methyl (1S,4S)-4-[(tert-butoxycarbonyl)amino]-1-(2-methoxyethyl)cyclopent-2-ene-1-carboxylate (0.78 g, 2.6 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran (1.5 mL), methanol (15 mL), and water (3.0 mL) was added lithium hydroxide monohydrate (0.55 g, 13 mmol) and the resulting orange mixture was stirred at 80° C. overnight. The solvents were evaporated and the mixture was acidified with 6 N HCl to a pH of about 4. The aqueous was then extracted with methylene chloride three times. The combined organic layers were dried (MgSO4), filtered, and concentrated in vacuo to give the desired product as an oil (0.47 g, 63.2%). LCMS calculated for C14H24NO5: (M+H) 286.2; found 286.2.
