Brown tribromide (8 ml) in dichloromethane was added dropwise and the mixture stirred at room temperature for 24 hours. After addition of dilute sodium bicarbonate, the organic phase was removed, dried and evaporated to give a pale oil, which was converted to the hydrochloride salt of the title compound, by trituration with ethereal HCl, to give an off-white solid, 0.75 g, mp 162°-164°.
