Procedure

2,8-Dimethyl-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-pyrido[4,3-b]indole (100 mg, 0.5 mmol), β-bromo styrene (91 mg, 0.55 mmol), CuI (9 mg, 0.05 mmol), L-proline (11 mg, 0.1 mmol) and potassium phosphate (212 mg, 1 mmol) taken in DMF (3 mL) under inert atmosphere, heated overnight at 80° C. The reaction mixture was cooled to RT, quenched with water, extracted with EtOAc, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and evaporated under reduced pressure. The crude product was purified by column chromatography to afford 35 mg of title compound as the free base. 1H NMR (CDCl3, HCl salt) δ (ppm): 7.60-7.55 (d, 1H), 7.50-7.45 (m, 3H), 7.42-7.38 (m, 2H), 7.25-7.20 (m, 2H), 7.15-7.10 (d, 1H), 6.80-6.75 (d, 1H), 3.75 (s, 2H), 3.12-3.05 (m, 2H), 2.98-2.90 (m, 2H), 2.67 (s, 3H), 2.50 (s, 3H).
