Procedure
To a stirred solution of 3,5-diiodo-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde (10.0 g, 26.7 mmol) in THF (267 mL) at 0° C. was added NaH (1.39 g, 34.7 mmol). After 0.5 h at this temperature, MEMCl (4.88 mL, 42.7 mmol) was added dropwise. The reaction mixture was stirred for another 15 min. at 0° C. and then at room temperature for 18 h. The resulting mixture was quenched with 0.1 N NaOH and extracted with Et2O (1000 mL). The organic layer was washed with 0.1 N NaOH (3×100 mL) and brine (100 mL) and then dried (MgSO4). After concentration, the residue was purified by flash chromatography (5 to 15% EtOAc/petroleum ether gradient) to afford the product (8.60 g, 69%) as a solid; 1H NMR (CDCl3) δ3.44 (s, 3H), 3.67 (t, J=5.5 Hz, 2H), 4.16 (t, J=5.5 Hz, 2H), 5.34 (s, 2H), 8.29 (s, 2H), 9.82 (s, 1H).
