Procedure
A solution of 4-bromo-2-fluoroaniline (19.6 g, 103.16 mmol), 2-hydroxy-6-methyl-benzaldehyde (14.03 g, 103.16 mmol) and p-toluenesulfonic acid (188 mg, 0.99 mmol) in toluene (300 mL) was heated to reflux in a Dean-Stark apparatus for 1 h and then allowed to cool to ambient temperature. After adding triethylamine (0.8 mL) the reaction mixture was concentrated to give the crude title compound (31.7 g, 99%) which was used without further purification. Data: 1H-NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 2.52 (s, 3H), 6.72 (d, J=7.6 Hz, 1H), 6.88 (d, J=8.6 Hz, 1H), 5.15 (t, J=7.8 Hz, 1H), 7.26-7.38 (m, 3H), 9.03 (s, 1H), 13.63 (s, 1H).
