A solution of (3S)-4-tert-butoxycarbonyl-3-formylmorpholine (1.5 g) in dichloromethane (15 ml) was added dropwise to the solution over 10 minutes at 0° C. and stirred for 3 hours, and the mixture was added saturated sodium hydrogen carbonate solution. The organic layer was separated and the aqueous layer was extracted with ethyl acetate three times. The combined organic layer was washed with brine, dried over magnesium sulfate, and evaporated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by column chromatography on silica gel using a mixture of ethyl acetate and n-hexane (4:6) to give (3R)-4-tert-butoxycarbonyl-3-(2,2-dibromoethenyl)morpholine as an oil.
