Procedure
A mixture of 4-cyanophenol (6.0 g, 50.0 mmol), potassium carbonate (27.6 g, 200 mmol) and citronellylbromide (13.15 g, 60.0 mmol) in acetone (200 mL) was heated under reflux for 24 hours. The solvent was evaporated and the residue was taken up with CH2Cl2 (60 mL×2) and the solution filtered. The solvent was evaporated and the resulting oil was purified by flash column chromatography over silica gel (EtOAc/hexanes 1:1) as eluant to give 4-[(3S)-3,7-dimethyl-6-octenyloxy]cyanobenzene (11.76 g, 45.7 mmol, 91.4% yield) as a white oil.
