Procedure

To a suspension of sodium hydride (60% active, 31 mg) in dimethylformamide (1 ml) was added a solution of ethyl 4-propionamidocinnamate (160 mg) in dimethylformamide (2 ml) at ambient temperature under nitrogen atmosphere. The mixture was stirred for 1 hour at same temperature, and a solution of iodomethane (111 mg) in dimethylformamide (2 ml) was added thereto. The reaction mixture was stirred at same temperature for 2 hours, poured into water, and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with water, dried over magnesium sulfate and evaporated in vacuo to give ethyl 4-(N-methylpropionamido)cinnamate (168 mg) as an oil.
