Chelating
Solubility
CLEAR, HYGROSCOPIC GLASS; MP 628 °C; SOL IN WATER, BUT DISSOLVES SLOWLY; DEPOLYMERIZES IN AQ SOLN TO FORM SODIUM TRIMETAPHOSPHATE & SODIUM ORTHOPHOSPHATES. /POLYMERIC SODIUM METAPHOSPHATES/
SOL IN WATER; INSOL IN ORG SOLVENTS. /SODIUM HEXAMETAPHOSPHATE DETERGENTS/
Decomposition
When heated to decomposition it emits toxic fumes of phosphoxides and Na2O.
WHEN HEATED TO DECOMP, CAN EMIT HIGHLY TOXIC FUMES OF PO(X).
Other Experimental Properties
It possesses sequestering, dispersing, and flocculating properties and precipitates proteins. In very low concentrations, it inhibits corrosion in steel and prevents the precipitation of slightly soluble, scale-forming compounds such as calcium carbonate and calcium sulfate. /Calgon/
Depolymerizes in aqueous soln to form sodium trimetaphosphate and sodium orthophosphates.
Miscible in water, but insoluble in organic solvents. /Calgon/

NO HEALTH HAZARDS ARE ASSOCIATED WITH SODIUM HEXAMETAPHOSPHATE IN FOODS & NATURAL WATERS.
... /SODIUM/ SALTS, SUCH AS METAPHOSPHATES, ARE TOXIC PROBABLY BECAUSE OF THEIR EXCESS ALKALINITY RATHER THAN FROM SIMPLE SODIUM EXCESS. /SODIUM METAPHOSPHATES/
ACUTE POISONING BY INJESTION: ... EVEN THOUGH PATIENTS RECOVER FROM IMMEDIATE DAMAGE, ESOPHAGEAL STRICTURE CAN OCCUR WK, MO, OR YR LATER TO MAKE SWALLOWING DIFFICULT. INGESTION OF TRIPOLYPHOSPHATE ... IN ... DETERGENTS OR LAXATIVES CAUSE SHOCK-LIKE STATE, FALL OF BLOOD PRESSURE, SLOW PULSE, CYANOSIS COMA & SOMETIMES TETANY AS RESULT OF REDN IN IONIC CALCIUM. /ALKALIES/

Environmental Bioconcentration
A comprehensive examination of metal levels at various trophic levels within an undisturbed Precambrian Shield lake ecosystem was made. Concn of 21 naturally occurring elements including phosphorus were measured in sediments, clams, fish, birds, and mammals. Mercury was the only element to exhibit biomagnification. /Phosphorus/
Non-Human Toxicity Excerpts
... FEEDING RATS 3% & 5% ... SODIUM HEXAMETAPHOSPHATE RESULTED IN SEVERE KIDNEY DAMAGE, WHILE FEEDING 1.8% ... CAUSED NO OBSERVABLE PHYSIOLOGICAL DAMAGE. ... HOWEVER, WHEN DOGS WERE FED INCREASING DOSAGES ... BEGINNING AT 1.0 G/KG/DAY AND INCREASING TO 4.0 G/KG FOR THE LAST MONTH OF A 5-MONTH FEEDING PERIOD, THE DOGS ... BEGAN TO LOSE WEIGHT WHEN THE DAILY DOSE REACHED 2.5 G/KG/DAY.
SODIUM HEXAMETAPHOSPHATE DID NOT EXHIBIT GENETIC ACTIVITY IN THE FOLLOWING IN VITRO MICROBIAL ASSAYS: S TYPHIMURIUM (PLATE TESTS, NON-ACTIVATION SUSPENSION TESTS, ACTIVATION SUSPENSION TESTS); S CEREVISIAE (NON-ACTIVATION & ACTIVATION SUSPENSION TESTS).
ORAL ADMIN OF UP TO 240 MG/KG BODY WT TO PREGNANT RATS & UP TO 370 MG/KG BODY WT TO PREGNANT MICE (BOTH FOR 10 CONSECUTIVE DAYS) HAD NO DISCERNIBLE EFFECT ON NIDATION OR ON MATERNAL OR FETAL SURVIVAL. SOFT & SKELETAL TISSUE ABNORMALITIES SAME AS CONTROL.
Studies of animals showed that ... sodium hexametaphosphate fed at high concentrations in water /interferes/ ... with trace metal metabolism.
Sodium hexametaphosphate depressed the growth of 7 strains of Streptococcus mutans (serotype a-g) as assessed by disk diffusion methods. Minimal inhibitory concn of condensed phosphates on growth of strain Kl-R (g) in a chemically defined medium were measured turbidimetrically. The minimal inhibitory concn of condensed phosphates on Streptococcus mutans appeared to be related to their chelating capacity. As the growth inhibition by condensed phosphates was reversed by the addition of divalent metal ions (calcium(2+), magnesium(2+), manganese(2+)), the chelating capacity of condensed phosphates was apparently responsible for their antibacterial action.
