Fire Hazards · 3건

Special Hazards of Combustion Products: Toxic and irritating gases are generated in fires. (USCG, 1999)

· Some of these materials may burn, but none ignite readily.;· Most vapors are heavier than air.;· Air/vapor mixtures may explode when ignited.;· Container may explode in heat of fire.

Combustible under specific conditions. Heating will cause rise in pressure with risk of bursting. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.

Fire Potential · 2건

It burns only in excess of oxygen or in air if a strong source of ignition is present.

An accidental explosion during a welding operation on a 1050 cu m tank holding 70 metric tons of inhibited 1,1,1-trichloroethane under nitrogen to exclude moisture is described. An investigation revealed that the storage tank did not contain any residual contamination from previous products and the 1,1,1-trichloroethane was not contaminated with highly flammable liquids. During the purging of the pipeline, a volume of nitrogen equivalent to approximately 1/2 tank volume had been injected near the base of the tank. The amount of nitrogen added manually, through the roof of the tank, could not be quantified. It was determined that inerting the tank by nitrogen had been insufficient and that a flammable concn of 1,1,1-trichloroethane occupied a portion of the tank near the top and was ignited by heat from welding. Although chlorinated hydrocarbons are often regarded as non-flammable, 1,1,1-trichloroethane for hot work purposes should be treated as highly flammable.

EYES: First check the victim for contact lenses and remove if present. Flush victim's eyes with water or normal saline solution for 20 to 30 minutes while simultaneously calling a hospital or poison control center. Do not put any ointments, oils, or medication in the victim's eyes without specific instructions from a physician. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim after flushing eyes to a hospital even if no symptoms (such as redness or irritation) develop.;SKIN: IMMEDIATELY flood affected skin with water while removing and isolating all contaminated clothing. Gently wash all affected skin areas thoroughly with soap and water. If symptoms such as redness or irritation develop, IMMEDIATELY call a physician and be prepared to transport the victim to a hospital for treatment.;INHALATION: IMMEDIATELY leave the contaminated area; take deep breaths of fresh air. If symptoms (such as wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, or burning in the mouth, throat, or chest) develop, call a physician and be prepared to transport the victim to a hospital. Provide proper respiratory protection to rescuers entering an unknown atmosphere. Whenever possible, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) should be used; if not available, use a level of protection greater than or equal to that advised under Protective Clothing.;INGESTION: DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. Volatile chemicals have a high risk of being aspirated into the victim's lungs during vomiting which increases the medical problems. If the victim is conscious and not convulsing, give 1 or 2 glasses of water to dilute the chemical and IMMEDIATELY call a hospital or poison control center. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim to a hospital. If the victim is convulsing or unconscious, do not give anything by mouth, ensure that the victim's airway is open and lay the victim on his/her side with the head lower than the body. DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim to a hospital. (NTP, 1992)

1,1,1-Trichloroethane was detected in the body fat of 8 subjects at concentrations ranging from 1.6-24 ng/g(1). 1,1,1-Trichloroethane was detected in residents of Old Love Canal: breath - 290 ng/cu m median, 2800 ng/cu m maximum; blood - 0.85 ng/mL median, 2.0 ng/mL maximum; urine - 80 ng/L median, 180 ng/L maximum(2). 1,1,1-Trichloroethane was detected in all eight samples of mother's milk from four US urban areas(3). 59% of individuals (39 subjects, 23-54 years of age) from Dusseldorf, West Germany who were not occupationally exposed to 1,1,1-trichloroethane had whole blood levels of the chemical ranging from <0.1-3.4 ppb, median 0.2 ppb(4). Whole blood samples of those occupationally exposed contained 1,1,1-trichloroethane ranging from <0.1-0.2 ppb for motor vehicle mechanics, <0.1 for painters, 0.1-15.5 ppb for precision tool makers, 389.0-2497.9 ppb for dry cleaners using tetrachloroethylene as dry-cleaning agent, and 17.6-48.2 ppb for dry cleaners using trichlorofluoromethane as a dry-cleaning agent(4). In another study, 1,1,1-trichloroethane in the whole blood of 250 patients who suffered from a variety of symptoms that may have been related to exposure to environmental pollutants ranged from not detectable to 26 ppb, 1.0 ppb mean(5). Human tissue sample collected in Turku, Finland in 1987 contained the following levels of 1,1,1-trichloroethane: kidney, 0.1 ug/kg; lungs, 0.1 ug/kg; muscle, 0.4 ug/kg(6). 1,1,1-Trichloroethane was qualitatively detected in 66% the blood samples obtained of more than 150 children from two poor, minority neighborhoods in Minneapolis, MN(7). 1,1,1-Trichloroethane was identified, not quantified, in samples of blood obtained in October 2001 from firefighters that responded to the collapse of the World Trade Center in New York City, NY(8).

As part of EPA's Total Exposure Assessment Methodology (TEAM) study, the concentration of various toxic substances in the personal air (two consecutive 12-hr periods) of sample populations was measured. The weighted median results for 1,1,1-trichloroethane in personal air in Bayonne and Elizabeth, New Jersey, an industrial/chemical manufacturing area, was 17, 9.3, and 22 ug/cu m in the fall 1981, summer 1982, and winter 1983, respectively. For comparison the personal air samples from residents living in a manufacturing city without a chemical or petroleum refining industry (Greensboro, NC) and in a small, rural, and agricultural town in North Dakota, contained 32 and 25 ug/cu m, respectively(1).

Treatment · 1건

If the compound has been ingested, rapid gastric lavage should be performed using 5% sodium bicarbonate. For skin contact, the skin should be washed with soap and water. If the compound has entered the eyes, they should be washed with large quantities of isotonic saline or water. In serious cases, atropine and/or pralidoxime should be administered. Anti-cholinergic drugs work to counteract the effects of excess acetylcholine and reactivate AChE. Atropine can be used as an antidote in conjunction with pralidoxime or other pyridinium oximes (such as trimedoxime or obidoxime), though the use of '-oximes' has been found to be of no benefit, or possibly harmful, in at least two meta-analyses. Atropine is a muscarinic antagonist, and thus blocks the action of acetylcholine peripherally.

Mechanism of 1,1,1-trichloroethane-induced ventricular fibrillation was studied in mice. Adrenalectomized mice and mice treated with a cmpd (p286), which blocks the release of adrenal catecholamines, were not protected from 1,1,1-trichloroethane-induced fibrillation. The mice, whether adrenalectomized or not, were protected by reserpine and particularly by the beta-blocker, propranolol.

A 24 hr inhalation of methyl chloroform by male mice decreased sodium hexobarbital (80 mg/kg) induced hypnosis, but had no effect on sodium barbital or chloral hydrate induced hypnosis.

Acute behavioral and lethal effects of oral ethanol and inhaled 1,1,1-trichloroethane (TCE) alone and in combination were determined in mice. For lethality, ethanol shifted TCE concn-effect curve to left in parallel manner, with magnitude of shift directly related to dose of ethanol. Combinations of low doses of ethanol with TCE were usually supraadditive, while higher doses of ethanol were additive or infraadditive with TCE. Shifts to left of TCE concn-effect curves for behavioral testing similarly depended on dose of ethanol, but were nonparallel. Probably, in many combinations, significant acute toxicity may occur with joint admin. Health hazards to workers who ingest ethanol prior to on-the-job exposure to TCE are discussed.

Acute exposure to cholinesterase inhibitors can cause a cholinergic crisis characterized by severe nausea/vomiting, salivation, sweating, bradycardia, hypotension, collapse, and convulsions. Increasing muscle weakness is a possibility and may result in death if respiratory muscles are involved. Accumulation of ACh at motor nerves causes overstimulation of nicotinic expression at the neuromuscular junction. When this occurs symptoms such as muscle weakness, fatigue, muscle cramps, fasciculation, and paralysis can be seen. When there is an accumulation of ACh at autonomic ganglia this causes overstimulation of nicotinic expression in the sympathetic system. Symptoms associated with this are hypertension, and hypoglycemia. Overstimulation of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the central nervous system, due to accumulation of ACh, results in anxiety, headache, convulsions, ataxia, depression of respiration and circulation, tremor, general weakness, and potentially coma. When there is expression of muscarinic overstimulation due to excess acetylcholine at muscarinic acetylcholine receptors symptoms of visual disturbances, tightness in chest, wheezing due to bronchoconstriction, increased bronchial secretions, increased salivation, lacrimation, sweating, peristalsis, and urination can occur. Certain reproductive effects in fertility, growth, and development for males and females have been linked specifically to organophosphate pesticide exposure. Most of the research on reproductive effects has been conducted on farmers working with pesticides and insecticdes in rural areas. In females menstrual cycle disturbances, longer pregnancies, spontaneous abortions, stillbirths, and some developmental effects in offspring have been linked to organophosphate pesticide exposure. Prenatal exposure has been linked to impaired fetal growth and development. Neurotoxic effects have also been linked to poisoning with OP pesticides causing four neurotoxic effects in humans: cholinergi

Mechanism of Action · 2건

... 1,1,1-Trichloroethane sensitizes the heart to epinephrine and may induce cardiac arrhythmias and arrest.

The mechanism by which acute exposures to high concentrations of 1,1,1-trichloroethane depress the central nervous system is thought to involve interactions of the parent compound with lipids and/or proteins in neural membranes that lead to dysfunction. In general, the highly lipophilic nature of chlorinated hydrocarbons, such as 1,1,1-trichloroethane, allows them to cross the blood-brain barrier readily and partition into lipids in neuronal membranes. This property allows them to interfere with neural membrane function, bringing about central nervous system depression, behavioral changes, and anesthesia.

Human half-life of elimination was calculated for the following compartments: Vessel-rich tissues (0.8 hr); Muscle and skin (7 hr); Adipose tissue (35 hr) following exposure of subjects to 72 and 215 ppm methyl chloroform.

Following exposure /of rodents/ to 810 mg/cu m (150 ppm), the half-lives were 10 and 139 min, whereas with 8100 mg/cu m (1500 ppm), the half-lives were 36 and 238 min.

Metabolism/Metabolites · 6건

Metabolism appears to play a relatively minor role in the overall disposition of absorbed 1,1,1-trichloroethane in humans. Less than 10% of the absorbed dose is metabolized; a large fraction is excreted unchanged in exhaled air, regardless of the route of exposure. The major metabolites of 1,1,1-trichloroethane are water-soluble trichloroethanol and its glucuronide conjugate, trichloroacetic acid and carbon dioxide. The total amount of trichloroethanol and trichloroacetic acid excreted in urine accounts for 77% of the predicted amount of metabolized 1,1,1-trichloroethane. Excretion of trichloroethanol and trichloroacetic acid in urine is slow in relation to exhalation of 1,1,1-trichloroethane and these metabolites may accumulate with repeated exposure.

Metabolism following oral exposure is similar to metabolism following inhalation exposure. ... Approximately 3% of a dose ingested in drinking water by rats was metabolized and excreted as CO2 in expired air or as metabolites in urine. Mice metabolized 1,1,1-trichloroethane more extensively than rats. This is consistent with the metabolic differences between rats and mice following inhalation exposure, ... .

The data on 1,1,1-trichloroethane metabolism by animals are consistent with the human data. Approximately 90% of the inhaled dose is excreted unchanged in expired air, while the remainder is eliminated as CO2 in expired air and as trichloroethanol and trichloroacetic acid in the urine. A similar pattern of metabolism and subsequent excretion occurred in acutely and chronically exposed mice; the majority of 1,1,1-trichloroethane was excreted unchanged in the expired air and a small percentage was metabolized.

Metabolism has been shown to be saturable in animals over a range of exposure levels of 150-1500 ppm (820-8200 mg/cu m); thus, as the exposure level and absorbed dose increase, metabolism will contribute less to overall elimination of 1,1,1-trichloroethane.

Absorption, Distribution and Excretion · 5건

1,1,1-Trichloroethane is rapidly taken up by humans after inhalation exposure. Experimental data collected in human subjects indicate that absorption of 1,1,1-trichloroethane is nearly complete following a single breath exposure, and that a steady-state lung retention of 25-30% in humans is achieved within 1-3 hours of continuous exposure. Steady-state blood levels are approximately 5-6 times that of alveolar air and increase with increasing air concentration, increasing alveolar ventilation and cardiac output. The percentage uptake of inhaled 1,1,1-trichloroethane decreased rapidly from approximately 95% at the beginning /single breath/ of a four-hour exposure to 30% at the end /steady state/.

The absorption of 1,1,1-trichloroethane by the skin in humans has been shown to be dependent on the duration of exposure and the area of skin exposed. 1,1,1-Trichloroethane vapours are absorbed through exposed skin to some extent, although absorption through the respiratory tract is expected to predominate during whole-body exposure to vapours. A quantitative examination of the relative magnitudes of percutaneous and respiratory absorption indicated that a whole-body exposure to 600 ppm (3280 mg/cu m) 1,1,1- trichloroethane for over 3.5 hours was equivalent to an inhalation exposure of only 0.6 ppm (3.3 mg/cu m) over the same time period.

After cessation of inhalation exposure, 1,1,1-trichloroethane is rapidly eliminated from the blood; 60-80% is eliminated within two hours after exposure and more than 95-99% within 50 hours.

Expired air concentrations after topical application of TCE or continuous immersion of the hand for 30 minutes were 0.5 ppm and 10 ppm respectively at 30 minutes post-exposure. In contrast, respiratory exposure for a similar time to levels sufficient to cause only mild symptoms, i.e. 910 ppm, was associated with expired air concentrations of around 35 ppm at 30 minutes post-exposure. The skin is therefore a considerably less significant route of absorption than the lung. ... Peak alveolar levels of 45 ppm /were estimated/ after immersion of both hands in TCE for 30 minutes, similar to peak levels observed after respiratory exposure of the same duration to 100-500 ppm in air. Penetration is less with topical application than after total immersion by a factor of about 20. They concluded that provided the solvent is not confined beneath an impermeable barrier there is little likelihood that toxic amounts will be absorbed during normal industrial use. The vapor itself is not absorbed in significant amounts through the skin.

개요1,1,1-Trichloroethane (1,1,1-TCE) was first identified in 1840 by Henri Victor Regnault, a French chemist and physicist. 1,1,1- TCE is a synthetic chemical that is released to the environment primarily by human industrial activity such as by-process and fugitive emissions during its manufacture, formulation, and use in both consumer and industrial products, which can then undergo thermal and photochemical chlorination. 1,1,1-TCE was originally introduced as a replacement for other chlorinated and flammable solvents like carbon tetrachloride. Although trichloroethane was formerly used extensively in a range of industrial applications and consumer products, including such products as adhesives and adhesive cleaners, lubricants, general purpose liquid cleaners and spray degreasers, oven cleaners, spot removers, shoe polish, and fabric finishes, and as a precursor for hydrofluorocarbons, it is no longer used in common household products. 1,1,1-TCE was one of the compounds addressed by the Montreal Protocol in 1987, which stipulates that the production and consumption of these potentially ozone-depleting substances in the stratosphere were to be phased out. Under this agreement, the final phase out for developed countries for 1,1,1-TCE was 1996, with selected exceptions for existing stocks and essential uses; developing countries have until 2015 for their ban to take effect.

용도1,1,1-Trichloroethane is used as a cleaningsolvent for cleaning metals and plastic molds.

일반 설명A colorless liquid with a sweet, pleasant odor. May irritate skin, eyes and mucous membranes. In high concentrations the vapors may have a narcotic effect. Nonflammable, but may decompose and emit toxic chloride fumes if exposed to high temperatures. Used as a solvent.
