Procedure
A mixture of the compound obtained in Example 5A (1.12 g), ethyl chlorocarbonate (0.35 g), potassium carbonate (0.47 g) and tetrahydrofuran (20 ml) was stirred at room temperature for 3 hours. The reaction mixture was poured over water and extracted with ethyl acetate; the ethyl acetate layer was washed with water and dried (MgSO4), after which the solvent was distilled off. The residue was subjected to silica gel column chromatography and eluted with ethyl acetate-hexane (1:1, v/v) to yield ethyl 2-(N,N-diethylaminomethyl)-4-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-7-ethoxycarbonyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydrothieno[2,3-b:5,4-c']dipyridine-3-carboxylate (for structural formula, see below) (0.89 g, 56%), which was then recrystallized from ethyl acetate-hexane to yield colorless prismatic crystals having a melting point of 119 to 120° C. ##STR54##
