2-Chloro-3-cyano-6-methyl pyridine (1.5 g, 9.8 mmol) and methyl thioglycolate (0.88 mL, 9.8 mmol) were dissolved in DMF (7 mL). To the solution was added 1.0 g KOH in 5 mL H2O over 30 min. The reaction was then quenched by the addition of ice water, and the product collected by filtration to yield 1.72 g (79%) of the title compound: 1H N (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ 2.88 (s, 3H), 3.91 (s, 3H), 5.90 (br s, 2H), 7.17 (d, 1H), 7.82 (d, 1H).
