A catalytic amount of 5% platinum on carbon was added to a suspension of 1,1-dimethyl-2-[(3-nitro[1,5]naphthyridin-4-yl)amino]ethanol (7 g, 26 mmol) in isopropanol (300 mL). The mixture was hydrogenated on a Parr apparatus at 50 psi (3.5 Kg/cm2) hydrogen pressure for 3 hours. The reaction mixture was fileted to remove the catalyst. The filtrate was concentrated under vacuum. Toluene was added to the residue and the mixture was concentrated under vacuum to remove all of the alcohol and provide crude 1,1-dimethyl-2-[(3-amino[1,5]naphthyridin-4-yl)amino]ethanol.
