Procedure
In 20 mL of water is dissolved 1.50 g of 2-[(3,4-diaminophenethyl)oxy]-1-ethanol. After adjusting pH of the solution to 6.5 with sodium hydrogen carbonate, 2.22 g of sodium glyoxal bicarbonate is added at 60° C., and the mixture thus formed is stirred at the same temperature as above for 30 minutes. Ethyl acetate is added to the reaction mixture, pH is adjusted to 10 with 2 mol/L aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide, and the organic layer is separated. The organic layer is washed with saturated aqueous solution of sodium chloride and dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, and the solvent is distilled off under reduced pressure to obtain 0.73 g of 2-[2-(6-quinoxalinyl)-ethoxy]-1-ethanol as an oily product.
