Ethyl (2E)-3-{4-[({1-[(tert-butoxycarbonyl)amino]cyclopentyl}carbonyl)amino]phenyl}acrylate (from Step 1) was dissolved in CH2Cl2 (0.5 M) and an excess of hydrogen chloride in diethyl ether (2.0 M) was added. The solution was left stirring overnight at RT. The precipitate formed was filtered off and dried in vacuo. A colourless solid was obtained (99%), which was used without further characterisation.
