Procedure

A solution of ethyl 5-hydroxyquinoline-3-carboxylate (2.17 g, 10 mmol) prepared in stage D of example 2, Na2CO3 (2.12 g, 20 mmol) and benzylbromide (1.71 g, 10 mmol) in DMF (20 mL) was stirred for 12 hours at room temperature. The reaction mixture was diluted with water (50 mL) and then extracted with AcOEt (3×25 mL). The combined organic layers were washed water, and dried over Magnesium sulfate and evaporated under reduced pressure. The obtained residue was chromatographed over silica-gel.
