Intermediate 3 (30.9 g, 0.104 mol) was dissolved in methanol (500 mL), Pd(OH)2 (5.0 g) wet with distilled water was added, and the mixture was placed under hydrogen at 30 psi with shaking. After 48 hr Pd(OH)2 was removed by filtration and solvent was removed under vacuum giving 22 g of intermediate 4 as a yellow oil.
