Procedure
The product from Step B (5.4 g, 26.2 mmol) was taken up in DCM (50 mL) with stirring and cooled to 0° C. EDC (6.0 g, 31.4 mmol) and DMAP (164 mg, 1.31 mmol) were added followed by benzyl alcohol (2.4 mL, 23.6 mmol). The resulting solution was stirred at room temperature overnight with the exclusion of moisture. The reaction was diluted with DCM and washed successively with 1 M HCl, water, 5% Na2CO3 solution, brine and dried, filtered and evaporated to give a dark oil. This was purified by silica gel column chromatography eluting with hexane/ethyl acetate 1:1 to give the product as an orange oil (5.98 g, 70%). 1H-NMR δ (CDCl3) 7.38-7.17 (10H, m); 5.11 (2H, s), 4.08 (1H, m), 2.96 (2H, d, J=6.4 Hz), 2.64 (2H, d, J=6.4 Hz) and 2.27 (3H, s).
