Potassium carbonate (877 mg, 6.34 mmol, 1.05 eq) is added at room temperature to a stirred solution of trans-4-tert-butoxycarbonylamino-cyclohexanecarboxylic acid (1.50 g, 6.04 mmol, 1.0 eq) in N,N-dimethylformamide (30 mL), followed by methyl iodide (395 μL, 6.34 mmol, 1.05 eq). After 5 hours stirring at room temperature, solvent is evaporated and the residue is extracted with ethyl acetate (3×30 mL) and water (30 mL). The combined organic layers are washed with brine (30 mL), dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated to afford trans-4-tert-butoxycarbonylamino-cyclohexanecarboxylic acid methyl ester as a yellow solid (1.60 g, 98% yield).
