Procedure

To a stirred solution of 4-(6-chloro-4-(ethoxycarbonyl)chroman-7-yloxy)benzoic acid (Preparation 1) (1.15 g. 3.05 mmol), 1-hydroxybenzotriazole hydrate (0.51 g, 3.4 mmol) and 2-(4-bromo-2-chlorophenyl)ethanamine (0.75 g, 3.2 mmol) in N,N-dimethylformamide (10 mL) at ambient temperature was added solid 1-ethyl-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide hydrochloride (0.70 g, 3.7 mmol). The resulting solution was stirred at ambient temperature for 17 hours, then diluted with water (100 mL) and extracted with ethyl acetate (100 mL). Addition of 1M hydrochloric acid (20 mL) enabled layer separation. The organic layer was dried over sodium sulfate and concentrated. The residue was purified by chromatography on silica gel, eluting with 75/25 hexanes/ethyl acetate, to afford ethyl 7-(4-(4-bromo-2-chlorophenethylcarbamoyl)phenoxy)-6-chlorochroman-4-carboxylate as an off-white solid (1.10 g, 60% yield).
